Experience Lasting Pain Relief with Manual Therapy for Sports Injuries
Pain can affect anyone at any time – but for athletes, the lasting effects of an injury can disrupt training and competition. No matter the cause, finding effective ways to manage and alleviate pain is crucial to an athlete’s well-being and performance. The ease of getting and taking over-the-counter medication to manage pain has led to increased awareness of the side effects of long-term use. For those seeking a more natural way to alleviate pain, the manual therapy techniques used by our physical therapists offer long-lasting and effective treatment options.
Read along as we review a client’s experience with manual therapy for a painful sports injury that wouldn’t go away.
Manual Therapy For Lasting Pain Relief
An avid rugby player in his late 20s came to our clinic complaining of chronic lower back pain that stemmed from a tackle gone wrong during a match six months prior. Since the injury, he had tried various pain management strategies, but none had provided lasting relief. The persistent pain began to affect his performance on the field and his quality of life off it.
During the initial assessment, he described his pain as a dull ache that worsened with movement, especially bending and twisting. He also reported stiffness and limited range of motion in his lower back. We conducted a physical examination that revealed muscle tightness and tenderness in the lumbar region, as well as decreased flexibility in his hamstrings and hip flexors.
Given his history and the assessment findings, we developed a comprehensive manual therapy treatment plan that focused on pain relief, improving range of motion, and restoring function.
Techniques Included in Their Plan
Soft Tissue Therapy
- We applied hands-on therapy techniques to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and decrease tension. Some of the techniques we used included:
Deep Tissue Work:
- Restore tissue mobility with firm and slow pressure targeting the inner layers of muscles and connective tissue.
Myofascial Release
- Gentle, sustained pressure on connective tissues to release tight muscles.
Trigger Point Release
- Target the sensitive areas of a muscle – often referred to as “knots” – to release tension.
Mobilization
- Targeted, low-impact movements of joints throughout his body to increase range of motion.
Within a few sessions, he reported a significant decrease in back pain and improved sleep patterns. By sticking to our treatment plan of manual therapy appointments combined with strengthening exercises, he restored his overall mobility. He was able to return to the pitch with normal activity levels and minimal to no pain.
